Troubleshooting

  • I do not have access to the mobile app:
    • Please access the manual installation process here.
  • Mobile App cannot find my Access Points:
    • Units are positioned too far apart or too many obstacles are present between devices. Move your Air 4920 units closer to each other or realign to avoid obstacles.
    • It is advisable to do the Triple Pack setup in the same room. As soon as the setup is complete you can move the devices to their intended locations. This eliminates the possibility of a failed installation due to “out-of-reach” devices.
  • Most problems can be identified by keeping an eye on the LED lights on the front panel of the units.
  • The Triple Pack does not cover my entire home/office:
    • Please consider adding another mesh node to your installation. The wireless mesh link between the two Air 4920 units can also be replaced with an Ethernet cable where and if convenient. This feature is especially useful in environments with high interference or where there are substantial obstacles to transmit through: e.g. reinforced concrete floors.

  • My AirTies Access Points’ 5GHz LED remains red:
    • Group the AirTies Access Points closer together; having a stronger link between the Access Points is more beneficial than having a strong signal on the client while the Mesh performance suffers.
    • The 5GHz band transmits on a much higher frequency than older 2.4GHz devices. Therefore, the signal degrades faster when transmitting through obstructions (than 2.4GHz). Are there multiple walls between the Access Points? Transmitting through reinforced concrete floors severely degrades the signal. Relocate the Air 4920s closer to each other until the 5GHz LED is solid green.
  • How do I access the manager interface of the Air 4920 devices?
    • Open a web browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) and browse to http://air4920.local.
    • A login page for the Air 4920 will appear. Enter “admin” in the Username field. Leave the Password field blank. Click on the OK button.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a mesh network?
    • Mesh networks enable multiple Access Points (APs) to work in unison to deliver fast, stable Wi-Fi. Each Access Point in the mesh connects to the other Access Points in the same network. Unlike a typical home network which is built around a centralised hub, a mesh network consists of multiple Access Points communicating with each other on a peer-to-peer basis.
    • The mesh network architecture inherently allows for much more robust and survivable Wi-Fi. When one mesh link experiences external interference (from whatever source), data traffic would temporarily be rerouted via more healthy mesh links, until the interference has dissipated. The Meshed Wi-Fi service would even survive one of the Access Points being shut down, as data will follow other paths to reach its destination.
    • A mesh architecture also allows you to easily expand the range of your Wi-Fi service by adding more mesh nodes in areas with poor coverage. This is a vast improvement over the conventional Wi-Fi setup with one centralised gateway attempting to service the entire house.
  • Can I hardwire my AirTies devices together?
    • Yes. All devices can be connected together via Ethernet or they can connect wirelessly. If your home is already wired with Ethernet, you may want to take advantage of these connections to increase the range of your units and reduce the risk of wireless interference.

  • What is the range of each device?
    • The device’s range may vary based on characteristics of your home including its building materials, layout, interference and device placement. You can extend the range of your network by adding more devices using our mesh.

Note: Different materials have varying impacts on signal strength:
      • Signal strength while next to the Access Point with clear line of sight is normally between -30dB to -40dB- this is the ideal condition.
      • Transmitting through a brick wall weakens the signal by -15dB.
      • Transmitting through a double brick wall weakens the signal by -30dB.
      • Transmitting through reinforced concrete weakens the signal by -53dB.
      • You clients or mesh nodes would need signal strength of at least -75dB to be able to communicate efficiently.
  • How many devices can one Access Point support?
    • One AirTies 4920 Access Point can support up to 250 devices. There is however a practical limitation in that all devices on a single Access Point share the capacity. Therefore, when each device connected to an Access Point has high bandwidth consumption, the Access Point would accommodate fewer devices before capacity is reached and performance is degraded.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it ok if my AirTies Access Point feels warm?
    • Like other electronic devices, Access Points are expected to get warm when they’re turned on and operating. Touching your running Access Point may feel comparable to touching the bottom of a laptop that’s been sitting on your lap and in use for an extended period of time.
To ensure your Access Point is operating at an optimal temperature, please:
      • Place your Access Point out in the open. Avoid placing Access Points inside of containers or in small, enclosed spaces.
      • Don’t cover your Access Points with other objects. Avoid placing anything on top of your Access Point or blocking the air vents in any way.
      • Avoid placing your Access Points near excessive heat or direct sunlight. Avoid placing your Access Points in locations where they will be in direct sunlight for the majority of the day. Please also avoid placing your Access Points near heat sources such as fireplaces and heaters.
      • Avoid placing your Access Points on soft surfaces. Your Access Points work best on a stable surface, so avoid putting them on chairs, cushions, and any other surface that doesn't allow your Access Points to have space beneath them to breathe.
      • Use the power adapter that came with your AirTies Access Point. Avoid using third party adapters which may not have been tested for compatibility with AirTies.

  • Can I wire other hardware devices to my AirTies Access Point?
    • Yes. The AirTies 4920 sports two 1000Mbps Ethernet ports to which you can connect any device that supports an Ethernet connection. This may be useful in connecting to a switch (making the number of Ethernet connections theoretically unlimited), smart TVs, storage devices, gaming consoles, desktop PCs, etc. You can connect these devices to your primary AirTies Access Point or to any of your additional Access Points.
  • How do I access the manager interface of the Air4920 devices?
    1. Open a web browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) and browse to http://air4920.local for the first (Main) unit, http://air4920-2.local for the second unit and http://air4920-3.local for the third unit.
    2. A login page for the Air 4920 will appear. Enter “admin” in the Username field. Leave the Password field blank. Click on the OK button.

Tips for best wi-fi performance

  • It is highly recommended to turn off all other Access Points (non-AirTies, including the Wi-Fi on the router). The less competition for airspace the better.
  • Keep units away from:
    • Potential sources of electrical interference. Equipment that potentially cause interference include ceiling fans, home security systems, electrical fences, floodlights, microwaves, PCs, and cordless phones (handset and base).
    • Large metal surfaces and objects. Large objects and wide surfaces such as glass, insulated walls, fish tanks, mirrors, brick and concrete walls can also weaken wireless signals.
    • Sources and areas of heat such as ovens and sun rooms as well as direct sunlight, even if a room is well air conditioned.
  • Place the devices as high as possible, any obstacles between the device and the Wi-Fi client has an impact on the Wi-Fi signal.
  • Keep Access Points as much “in the open” as you can. Don’t hide them in cabinets or above suspended ceilings, when possible. Every extra layer of obstruction is one more barrier that weakens the signal strength.

  • If a mesh link struggles to penetrate a reinforced concrete floor there are 3 options to overcome this:
    • Try and position the two mesh nodes on different floors directly over one another. Passing through a reinforced concrete floor diagonally deteriorates the signal drastically.
    • Place the two mesh nodes on different floors so that their link can follow the path of least resistance. This is typically also the path people follow – the staircase.
    • If and where convenient, the best high-performance option is to use an Ethernet cable between nodes.
  • Wi-Fi speed is not optimal:
    • This could be either due to a poor link between the AirTies Access Points or a poor link to the client in question.
    • Check the device placement. Are there multiple walls between the Access Points? Relocate devices until the 5GHz LED is solid green. The mesh link health can be verified with the App, green link arrows indicate a good connection, yellow indicates a fair connection while red indicates a poor connection.
    • Client devices with older Wi-Fi technology can degrade the performance of your entire network, especially when they are in areas of weak signal.
